WHERE ARE THEY NOW
A veteran of the New Zealand Rock scene in the 80's to early 90's, singer/songwriter Charlie has performed with several bands and his voice can be heard on two 80's releases. All Dressed Up And No Place To Play, where his band Broken Edge appear alongside several up and comers of the time on this Russell Crowe financed and produced compilation, and the self titled EP by Auckland New Wave band The Buckets Full, where he performed backing vocals.
After working as a roadie with the Buckets Full for awhile, Charlie joined local Classic Rock covers band, Jura and performed a variety of gigs at West Auckland venues and parties.
In 1987, after taking a job at second hand music store Revival Records in central Auckland, Charlie joined 4 piece Metal band Despiser where he remained, on and off, until 1991. the band was heavily influenced by the performances of bands such as WASP, Alice Cooper, Kiss and Iron Maiden and put a lot of effort into their stage show in their early days.
Eventually though, the band imploded and Charlie went on to form Roadrunner with the former bass player from Despiser. Roadrunner were a strange mix of Faith No More, Queen and Red Hot Chilli Peppers influences and hence were fairly eclectic in their styles.
After several line up changes, two demos, several gigs, particularly in support of Nine Livez and Push Push, Roadrunner, were on the verge of making it, when, after recording two songs for local kids show Yahoo, the band parted ways, mostly due to excessive behaviour from two members, one being Charlie himself.
After a brief stint playing acoustic covers, Charlie took on a job in 1993 as manager for one of Sounds Music stores and never returned to the stage with a band.
Between 1993 and 2009, Charlie learned to play guitar and began writing simple acoustic songs and occasionally jamming with friends and sometimes recording rough demos on a home stereo. Until in 2006 NoCtUrNaL fReAkShOw was born, when Apple introduced Garageband to their Laptops, a whole new world of home recording opportunities were opened.
Currently working on an ambitious new project entitled CeLeBrItY dOlLhOuSe
Big Idea CeLeBrItY dOlLhOuSe is a musical concept piece that is currently being developed for possible performance.
At this early stage it is uncertain whether this will work as a Rock Opera to be performed primarily by a band with perhaps a few guest performers, or whether it will move up to the level of Musical Theatre and all the trappings involved.
The bulk of the songs have been selected with minor lyrical changes possibly required.
A draft of the script is underway and will be available online for those who may want to get involved.
The subject matter is dark, but contemporary with elements of satire.
A story of betrayal, vengeance, tragedy and hope.
As at November 2009, a 12 month deadline has been targeted to have the show ready and to muster interest from potential performers, sponsors and investors.
