The Naked Blade Story
Formed in 1989, Naked Blade was one of New Zealand's hardest working
bands of the late 80's and 90's. They toured the country extensively from the
top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. Whether playing
large venues or smaller country towns, Naked Blade brought the true
essence of their brand of “Power Rock” to the NZ public.
The founding members of the band were: Nick Carter (Guitars), Dave King
(Drums), BG Kessell (Bass) and Dave Duke (Vocals). These members came
from solid musical backgrounds with experience playing in high profile local
bands of the day such as Dry Ice and Despiser. From the outset Naked Blade
promised to be an exciting and entertaining live experience.
Hiring a warehouse in South Auckland, Naked Blade spent months rehearsing
in the summer of 1989, wanting to ensure they were able to produce music
that was tight, energetic and loud
Naked Blade’s first gig was in April 1989 at the Wildlife Club in Auckland as
the opening act for a well-known local band, Enigma. Naked Blade
announced itself to the public with its first song; “Bark at the Moon” by Ozzy
Osborne and the months of hard work had paid off. Venues such as Wildlife,
The Westward Ho and the Power Station became regular haunts for Naked
Blade and its fans.
As with all bands, Naked Blade went through its share of line up changes.
Over the years members have come, gone and then come back again. Naked
Blade always seemed to be a band before its time. As an example they were
one of the first NZ groups to feature a female hard rock lead singer, belting
out tunes like Children of the Sea and Back in Black.
Although it initially played a mixture of cover and original songs, Naked Blade
had soon written a large number of originals, which in later years took pride
of place in the sets. 1992 -1994 was a golden period for Naked Blade. With a
management team and road crew Naked Blade began to tour extensively to
every corner of New Zealand. This culminated in a major tour of the South
Island in March 1994. The Band traveled over 2300km and performed 26
shows, all in 6 weeks. For a band that was playing non-top 40, heavy metal
and hard rock covers and originals, the tour was a huge success.
The band finally broke up in 1995 with the members all pursuing other
projects. Naked Blade returned briefly in 1999-2001 with 3 of the original
members: Nick Carter, Dave King and with BG Kessell handling both Bass
Guitar and Lead Vocal duties this time around. The band unashamedly
decided to play only the songs they wanted to. This meant a return to their
roots. And as a result a whole new audience were able to experience Naked
Blade music played with skill, panache and volume.
The Blade Returns
In July of 2008 Naked Blade was asked to reform and unite with some of the
biggest bands in the History of the New Zealand Hard rock and Metal scene
for a celebration of the Axe Attack radio show’s 21st Birthday held at The
Transmission Room in Auckland City. This gig produced one of the bands best
performances to date and was filmed and recorded for posterity.
Naked Blade currently exists as a 3-piece unit featuring 3 of the original
members: Nick Carter on Guitar, Dave King on Drums and BG Kessell on
Bass and Lead Vocals and is an ideal choice as a support act or as part of a
multi band classic Metal or Hard Rock line up.
The band has lost none of the early energy or musical firepower and its live
performances are still a force to be reckoned with.
